Stronger Bones Now – even on Prednisone

Is there a treatment available for osteoporosis? What can you do to reverse and regain your bone health?

Prednisone Osteoporosis

Prednisone helped so many to ease their suffering from their illnesses and give them hope. But one of the downsides of taking this drug is its side effects!

And prednisone gives off many side effects that might get us distracted and can’t even notice the irreversible and worst side effects. is there a treatment for osteoporosis?

So, these were the questions emailed by your fellow Prednisone Warriors:

1. My husband, who has… giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica (for which he has been taking Prednisone for a year now) was recently prescribed Apo-Alendronate, a bisphosphonate. A bone density test last September found that his risk was moderate.  He has worked hard ALL his life and has always had dense bones–he sinks to the bottom of a swimming pool.  I am leery of this new drug–and wonder if, in your opinion, he should refrain from taking it, at least for now.

2. I now have osteoporosis and osteopenia. (55 year old and it is in my genetics). My question is, what do I do now? I don’t want to take medication. Can I reverse it? I’ve heard I can. What about diet? I don’t love weights, but know I need to do it. I walk a lot. What is your advice?

Before, I’ll answer these questions let’s talk more about osteoporosis.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a type of bone disease that affects your bone density and bones mass.  This will make your bones brittle and weak that may lead to serious fractures even if you’re just bending or doing extra light movements of your body.

osteoporosis

This is a silent side effect that we usually missed out on since we can easily notice the other side effects caused by this drug! Osteoporosis caused by prednisone is permanent and irreversible.

How does prednisone cause Osteoporosis?

Prednisone depletes the essential nutrients in our body and that includes depleting calcium. The most dramatic bone loss happens during the 1st to 3 months of using prednisone.

Nutrients Depleted by prednisone

And since prednisone is a type of steroid, a scientific article stated:

Glucocorticoids cause significant bone loss, predominantly affecting trabecular bone, with consequent fragility fractures. The risk of fractures is related to the dose and duration of glucocorticoid use, but an increased risk may be observed even at low doses and even in the first month of treatment. Steps to prevent or treat osteoporosis should be considered in all patients who take the equivalent of prednisone at a dose of 2.5 mg or more per day for 3 or more months.

What are the symptoms of Osteoporosis?

According to the Mayo Clinic, osteoporosis symptoms are:

  • Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
  • Loss of height over time
  • A stooped posture
  • A bone that breaks much more easily than expected

Nearly one in five hip fracture patients ends up in a nursing home. (Even as young as 65!) And one in four are still unable to walk the same way a year after their fracture.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that can change your life forever. Bone fractures are a grim possibility when you get diagnosed but they don’t have to be your reality.

And there’s no better time to start rebuilding your bones than right now.
