7+ Stranger Side Effects of Prednisone

Tell me, tell me crystal ball, who’s the scariest of them all? 🧹 On Halloween, I’d have to say that the scariest might those of us taking PREDNISONE! We don’t even need a costume since prednisone gives us all we need! Are you experiencing the stranger side effects of prednisone?

Watch now!

On Halloween, we have to celebrate how prednisone makes us feel like we are characters that are perfect for Halloween. This is our day! Halloween is our day.

As my grandma always said, we either laugh about it or cry about it. Crying gives me a headache, so I choose to laugh. In this post, let’s enjoy how ridiculous the side effects truly can be. Prednisone has 150+ side effects, and here in this article, we explore some of the stranger side effects that make us feel like we don’t even need a costume on Halloween.

Which Prednisone Halloween Character are You?

1. The Witch

So first, we can feel like a witch! Because most days we feel like prednisone is changing our personalities. Prednisone is changing the way we interact with the world. It makes us either more anxious or more depressed or more euphoric.

It can even give you a thing called steroid psychosis which is terrible and you might even have to get hospitalized for it. You need to be aware that’s a possibility and if that’s a problem (or any other mental or personality change) check out these other videos I’ve made about the side effects that are psychiatric.

2. Vampire

The #2 is you might feel like a nocturnal vampire! And that’s because prednisone makes it harder for you to sleep. It is interfering with your circadian rhythm and makes it so at 2 o’clock in the morning you might just be wide awake and staring at the ceiling thinking, “When will I ever sleep again?”

Prednisone is an insomnia maker. In fact, insomnia is the #1 tweeted side effect that people complain about on Twitter. They’re talking about prednisone insomnia!

3. Skeleton

Next is a skeleton! You might feel like you are a skeleton because prednisone is the #1 drug that causes bone loss. Did you know that you can also call that osteoporosis or osteonecrosis where in fact the prednisone is causing bone death!

How appropriate for Halloween, isn’t it?

4. Mona Lisa

Here are some other ways that prednisone makes you feel like a spook on Halloween. Prednisone gives you a very round moon face. It is the Moon Face Maker after all! Plus it also makes you gain weight!

Another costume prednisone makes you feel like you’re dressed up like a pregnant lady, when you’re actually not at all pregnant. You might be 60 years old and thinking “There’s no way I’m pregnant at this point!” Or a man! That’s what prednisone does!

5. Striae

One of the another strange side effects of prednisone is striae. Striae is pronounced “Stry-ay.” That word alone is creepy enough, right? Oooh! Whisper it in a spook alley and everyone will run screaming. Ha!

Let’s talk about “striae” now. That’s a very fancy word, and it means stretch marks! Red ones that leave scars that don’t go away. Permanent stretch marks–just what you need on top of all the other side effects!

You’re not pregnant (like we just established even though prednisone makes you look like it) and yet you’re getting stretch marks as if you were. You can blame that on the prednisone–they’re called striae.

6. Purpura

All right, related to striae is purpura, another skin disfiguration. I had a purpura lesion on my upper arm when I got my diagnosis of ITP, which stands for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. It’s called that because it’s characterized by this really dark purple-red dot. Mine looked like a bull’s-eye. I could have said to the flu shot nurse, “Hey do you want to put the flu shot right there? That’s where you should put it–right on the bull’s eye!”

A purpura is bleeding under the skin. I had it because I have this crazy bleeding disorder called ITP. You can get purpura not only from ITP but also from prednisone itself. Purpura is the next strange thing that prednisone does to you.

It sure makes you feel like a Halloween spook, right?

7. Spooky Eyes – Prednisone Blurry Vision

Let’s talk about blurry vision. Prednisone makes you not be able to see as well. Sometimes prednisone can make your eyes just feel blurry. You might wonder, “Do I need a new prescription?” You can feel very confused about what is going on with your eyes.

Is prednisone causing blurry vision? Yes, this is a common side effect, and is usually harmless and temporary while you take prednisone. It usually goes away after you stop taking prednisone.

You might wonder, “Am I going blind?” Prednisone can actually cause cataracts and glaucoma, too, both of which can possibly cause blindness.

So, no matter what, you should probably get your eyes checked while on long-term prednisone. Even if it’s just a passing blurriness that most many people get. Often, that blurry vision from prednisone can be nothing to worry about. It’s just a strange side effect on its own that does eventually go away. But it could be those other eye side effects (cataracts, glaucoma), so make sure that you get checked by your doctor.

Four years ago this week the doctors told me I’d miss Trick-or-Treating with my little kids because I needed to stay in the hospital. They gave me my first taste of prednisone, setting off the roller coaster journey that led me to eventually become the Prednisone Pharmacist.
