Consequently, individuals on Prednisone often experience heightened hunger and cravings, particularly for high-calorie, sugary, and fatty foods. This is due to the disruption of appetite-regulating hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which leads to a persistent feeling of hunger.
The Long-term Health Implications
The increased appetite and subsequent weight gain can lead to long-term health complications, including diabetes and osteoporosis. Prednisone depletes essential nutrients such as chromium, calcium, and vitamin D, which are vital for maintaining bone health and regulating blood sugar levels.
