Ravenous Appetite on Prednisone? +PMR Tips
Managing Increased Appetite While on Prednisone

Prednisone, a corticosteroid commonly prescribed for conditions like Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), is a powerful medication that can significantly improve quality of life by alleviating debilitating symptoms. However, it comes with its own set of challenges, one of the most notable being an insatiable appetite. A Prednisone Warrior commented in one of my videos and shares her personal struggle with this side effect, highlighting the need for effective strategies to manage it.

Understanding the Appetite Surge

Prednisone mimics cortisol, a hormone crucial for the body’s stress response. This hormone prepares the body for survival by mobilizing energy reserves, raising blood sugar levels, and decreasing insulin sensitivity. Consequently, individuals on Prednisone often experience heightened hunger and cravings, particularly for high-calorie, sugary, and fatty foods. This is due to the disruption of appetite-regulating hormones like leptin and ghrelin, which leads to a persistent feeling of hunger.

The Long-term Health Implications

The increased appetite and subsequent weight gain can lead to long-term health complications, including diabetes and osteoporosis. Prednisone depletes essential nutrients such as chromium, calcium, and vitamin D, which are vital for maintaining bone health and regulating blood sugar levels. Chromium, in particular, is crucial for insulin function, and its deficiency can exacerbate issues with blood sugar control and appetite regulation.

Supplementation as a Solution

Research suggests that supplementing with chromium picolinate may help mitigate these adverse effects.

A study indicated that this form of chromium could reverse steroid-induced diabetes, highlighting its potential role in managing appetite and blood sugar levels for those on Prednisone. Incorporating chromium picolinate into one’s daily regimen may assist in regulating appetite and enhancing metabolic function.

Practical Strategies for Prednisone Causing Increased Appetite

In addition to supplementation, practical strategies can be employed to manage the overwhelming appetite. One effective method is to remove tempting, unhealthy foods from the home environment. By eliminating high-calorie snacks and processed foods, individuals can decrease the likelihood of succumbing to cravings. Emphasizing a diet rich in protein and vegetables can also aid in controlling hunger. Consuming these nutrient-dense foods can lead to a more balanced appetite and improved overall health.

Addressing Sleep Disturbances

Sleep disturbances are another prevalent side effect of Prednisone, often associated with its impact on melatonin production and circadian rhythms. The medication can disrupt the natural balance between cortisol and melatonin, resulting in insomnia. To address this issue, individuals may need to consider supplementing with melatonin and magnesium, both of which are essential for sleep regulation and overall metabolic health.

Nutranize Zone: A Comprehensive Supplement Solution

As a Prednisone Pharmacist with expertise in Prednisone-related issues, I created a supplement called Nutranize Zone.
