The World Lupus Survey on Patients Taking Prednisone identified the ten most common side effects experienced by lupus patients taking prednisone. The percentage shows how many of the 7741 surveyed suffered that specific side effect. This finally answers the question, “What are the most common side effects of prednisone?”

1. Weight gain 77%
2. Mood swings 54%
3. Appearance changes 53% [Moon face?]
4. Insomnia 52%
5. Increased appetite 51%
6. Hair loss 50%
7. Anxiety 40%
8. Depression 36%
9. Muscle weakness 33%
10. Infection 23%

Weight gain emerged as the most frequently reported side effect, affecting 77% of respondents. This finding aligns with other studies that have identified weight gain as a prevalent issue among individuals using prednisone. Mood swings, reported by 54% of participants, were the second most common side effect, significantly impacting emotional well-being. Changes in appearance, such as “moon face” and skin issues, were also noted, although specific details were not provided.

Major Disease-Like Side Effects of Prednisone

The survey revealed that 60% of individuals taking prednisone for lupus experienced at least one major side effect, with more than half reporting significant adverse effects. Five major disease-like side effects attributed to prednisone use were identified:

1. Diabetes: Specifically, steroid-induced diabetes, posing serious health risks.
2. Heart Disease: Encompassing a range of cardiovascular issues, including palpitations and the risk of strokes.
3. Organ Failure: While potentially more related to lupus, it remains a serious concern.
4. Osteoporosis: Prednisone is recognized as a leading cause of osteoporosis, significantly impacting bone health.
5. Vision Impairment: Conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts can severely affect quality of life.

The executive director of a lupus foundation, Mrs. Emma Danso said, “The side effects of the steroids used by lupus patients can be complete diseases for other people.”

Balancing Benefits and Drawbacks

Despite the potential for serious adverse effects, 90% of respondents felt that the benefits of prednisone in managing lupus symptoms outweighed the drawbacks, with many stating that it had been life-saving. However, it is noteworthy that 95% of those surveyed reported experiencing at least one side effect, highlighting the challenges of managing treatment with prednisone.
